Causes and Effects of the French Revolution

Revolutionary France gave rise to some of the most pivotal and highly-debated events in modern Western history. This course will explore the character of Old Regime France and its relationship to the causes of the Revolution, and the principal events of the Revolution itself will be examined in detail to the fall of Napoleon. We will also explore, more briefly, the role of these events in shaping modernity to the present day. Special attention will be paid to how Catholics experienced the tumultuous events of the Revolution and its aftermath.
